Getting a suppressor in Idaho in 2026

Fortress Cerakote, Nampa · October 26, 2026

More people in the Treasure Valley are buying their first suppressor this year than ever before, and most of them hit the same two questions in the same order: what does the paperwork look like now, and what does my barrel need. This is the short version of both, written from a shop that threads barrels in Nampa.

What changed on January 1, 2026

The federal transfer tax on suppressors, short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns went from $200 to $0 on January 1, 2026. The change was part of the budget bill signed in July 2025. The tax is gone; the process is not. A suppressor still transfers on an ATF Form 4 with fingerprints, a photo and a background check, and you still wait for approval before you can take it home.

The wait is the part nobody can promise. ATF took roughly 150,000 eForms on January 1 alone against a normal day of about 2,500, and approval times have moved around all year. Plan on weeks, not days, and plan on using them.

In Idaho, suppressors are legal to own and Idaho allows them for hunting. Check the current Idaho Fish and Game rules for the season you are hunting, since the rulebook is what counts in the field.

Which thread pitch your barrel needs

Match the suppressor or its mount, not the gun. Most cans ship with a direct-thread mount in one of two sizes, and quick-detach mounts have their own muzzle device that threads on the same way. The common pitches by caliber:

CaliberUsual pitchNotes

.338 Lapua and other magnums5/8x24 or 3/4x24Depends on barrel diameter and the can

If your rifle already has a thread protector on the muzzle, unscrew it: the barrel may be threaded from the factory and all you need is to match the can. If the pitch on the barrel and the can disagree, a thread adapter exists for most combinations, but a fresh set of threads cut to the right pitch is the cleaner answer.

Can my barrel be threaded?

Usually, but not always, and the thing that decides it is the diameter of the muzzle. Threads are cut into the outside of the barrel, so there has to be enough steel left around the bore after the thread is cut. A 5/8x24 thread needs a muzzle that measures comfortably more than 0.625 inches across. A thin "pencil" hunting barrel may only have room for 1/2x28, or may be too thin to thread safely at all. A shop measures the muzzle before quoting; a photo with a caliper or a tape across the end of the barrel saves everyone a trip.

  • Barrel length: threading removes nothing from the length, so a 16-inch rifle barrel stays a 16-inch barrel. If the barrel is shorter than 16 inches, a muzzle device pinned and welded to reach 16 inches is a separate job with its own rules. Ask before cutting.
  • Fluted barrels can be threaded if the flutes stop short of the muzzle. If they run all the way out, there is nothing solid to cut into.
  • Factory crowns are recut after threading so the bore exits cleanly. A damaged crown costs accuracy with or without a can.
  • Stainless, chrome-moly and nitrided barrels all thread; nitrided barrels are harder on tooling and the fresh threads will be bare steel, which is a reason to coat the barrel afterwards.

Why concentricity is the whole job

A suppressor hangs several inches of baffles in front of the muzzle with a hole through the middle that is only slightly larger than the bullet. If the threads are cut true to the outside of the barrel instead of to the bore, the can points a few thousandths off from where the bullet goes, and the bullet clips a baffle. That is a ruined suppressor, sometimes a bulged barrel, and a Form 4 to get it replaced.

Good threading dials the barrel in on the bore, cuts the threads and the shoulder in that same setup, and checks the result with an alignment rod through the can before the gun leaves. It takes longer than cutting threads on the outside diameter. It is the difference between a gunsmith and a guy with a die.

What to do while the Form 4 runs

The wait is the one part of the process you control. Get the barrel threaded now, so the can goes on the day it clears. And if the gun was ever going to be refinished, this is the drop-off to do it: it is already apart, already at the shop, and it comes back threaded and coated together.

Cerakote on the host gun runs $75 – $500 for a single color and $150 – $800 for patterns, depending on part count and prep. The suppressor itself can be coated too, in one of the high-temperature series made for the heat a can sees. Threading is quoted per barrel.

Got a can on order?

Text a photo of the barrel, the caliber and the suppressor you bought. You will get a thread pitch and a number, usually the same day.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I still need a tax stamp for a suppressor in 2026?
You still file an ATF Form 4 and wait for approval, and the approval still comes back as a stamp. The $200 tax that used to go with it is $0 for forms filed on or after January 1, 2026.
Can I hunt with a suppressor in Idaho?
Idaho allows suppressors for hunting. Check the current Idaho Fish and Game big-game and upland rules for the season you are hunting before you rely on it.
What thread pitch is a .308?
5/8x24 is the standard for .308 and the rest of the .30-caliber family, and it is what most 6.5 Creedmoor and 7mm barrels use too. Always confirm against the can or mount you are buying.
What thread pitch is a 9mm?
Pistol barrels are 1/2x28. Many 9mm AR and PCC barrels are 1/2x36. Check the barrel, not the caliber.
Can a pencil barrel be threaded?
Sometimes for 1/2x28, rarely for 5/8x24, and sometimes not at all. It comes down to the muzzle diameter. Measure the end of the barrel and send the number with your caliber.
Does threading change the barrel length?
No. Threads are cut into the outside of the existing muzzle. Nothing is shortened.
