Barrel threading

Barrel threading in Nampa, Idaho

Bought a suppressor, or about to? It needs a threaded barrel. Fortress Cerakote threads barrels for suppressors and muzzle devices at the same Nampa shop that does the coating, so the threading and the finish can happen in one drop-off.

Text a photo of the barrel, the caliber, and what is going on the end of it. You will usually have a quote the same day.

Home shop in Nampa, appointment only. Threading is quoted per barrel — text a photo and the caliber for a number.

Suppressor-ready work from the shop

Common thread pitches

1/2x28 is the standard for .22 LR, 9mm and 5.56 / .223. 5/8x24 is the standard for .30 caliber — .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Blackout and most hunting rifles. Larger pistol calibers and odd bores use other pitches. Send the caliber and the suppressor or device and I will tell you what it needs.

Good threads are cut concentric to the bore, not to the outside of the barrel. On a suppressor that is the difference between a quiet gun and a baffle strike, so it is the part of the job that gets the time.

Thread it and coat it on the same visit

Most people threading a barrel are waiting on an ATF Form 4 anyway. That wait is the right time to have the rifle or pistol Cerakoted — it comes back threaded and finished, ready for the can the day the paperwork clears. Coating is priced separately: single colors $75 – $500, multi-color $150 – $800.

Suppressors in 2026

Since January 1, 2026 the federal $200 transfer tax on suppressors is $0. The ATF Form 4 and background check still apply, but the stamp itself is free, and a lot of people are buying their first can this year. If that is you, the barrel is the one part of the setup you can get sorted while the paperwork runs.

How it works

Four steps

  1. Step 1

Text a photo and tell me the colors you want.

  2. Step 2

You get a quote, usually the same day.

  3. Step 3

Drop it off in Nampa, or ship it to me.

  4. Step 4

Back in your hands in 5–7 days.

Highly recommend Fortress Cerakote! Great communication, quick turnaround, great quality work, and Tanner went out of his way to fully help me with my first Cerakote project. Pricing was extremely reasonable as well. Don't hesitate to give them a try!

He kept me in the loop and sent progress pictures, which was above and beyond in my opinion. He's a perfectionist, so you can expect great work. I sent him the junkiest, worn down, old 1911 you could find and he returned it to me looking factory new. No chance I'll use anyone else in the future.

Black Cherry cerakote on the slide of my wife’s M&P Shield EZ. The work was finished days early and the results are amazing. So clean and so professional. It looks like it was done in the factory, only with my choice of custom color.

Tanner at Fortress Cerakote represents what it really means to own a small business in America. Always reachable, responsive, actively involved in helping figure out the perfect mix for my scattered vision. This is what doing business locally, in Idaho should look and feel like.

Had Tanner paint a couple frames for a 34 build and a 19 build so the shade of the color would match the slides. Quick turnaround and competitive pricing. Would recommend.

He said the first time he did it he wasn't happy with the outcome and redid the whole process over again until it met his criteria. Wow! Someone who actually cares about quality control in this day and age. That's a rarity.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which thread pitch do I need?
Match the suppressor or muzzle device, not the gun. Most .22, 9mm and 5.56 cans are 1/2x28; most .30 caliber cans are 5/8x24. If you are not sure, send the caliber and the suppressor model and I will tell you.
Can you thread a pistol barrel?
Yes — pistol and rifle barrels both. Text a photo with the make, model and caliber.
Do I bring the whole gun or just the barrel?
Either. If the barrel comes out easily, bring the barrel. If not, bring the gun and say so when you text, and we will sort out the easiest way.
How much does threading cost?
Quoted per barrel. It depends on the barrel profile, the pitch, and whether anything else is being done at the same time. Text a photo and the caliber for a number, usually the same day.
How long does it take?
Tell me when you need it back when you text, and the quote will come with a real date.
Can I see the color on my gun before I book?
Yes. The visualizer on this site takes a photo of your firearm and shows an AI preview of the finish on it. It is good for picking a direction, not an exact color match — the physical color card is the final word.
